The hardworking leather turner. BA42 takes the familiar freedom of a minimalist half sole and gives it a little more substance. Compared with stretch canvas, the leather feels more protective and structured around the forefoot while still allowing the heel, arch and majority of the foot to move completely freely.

Pink keeps the finish soft, understated and classically dance-inspired.

The defining difference between BA42 and its canvas sister BA41 is the soft leather upper. Leather creates a slightly more substantial layer around the forefoot, making BA42 particularly appealing to dancers who want minimalist coverage without quite such a delicate, barely-there feel.

Underneath, a full suede forefoot pad creates the working surface for turns and pivots. It protects the high-friction area beneath the ball of the foot while retaining close floor feedback and the controlled grip-to-glide relationship dancers expect from a traditional half sole.

The pleated forefoot construction follows the shape of the toes without extending underneath the arch, leaving the centre and back of the foot completely unrestricted. This preserves the articulation and barefoot-inspired line that make half soles so useful for contemporary and lyrical work.

Two elastics add useful versatility to the fit. They can sit around the heel in the traditional way, while the second elastic can also be positioned over the arch for additional security - particularly useful on narrower heels or for dancers who prefer the half sole to feel more firmly connected.

The difference from BA41 is subtle on paper but easy to understand on the foot. Canvas disappears more readily into movement; leather gives BA42 a slightly more substantial, protected feeling around the toes and forefoot while keeping the same open half-sole freedom.

We like BA42 particularly for dancers who use their half soles regularly. Leather makes sense when durability matters, and the adjustable second elastic is a genuinely useful detail when you want a closer hold around a narrower foot.

Our overall impression: BA42 is the traditional half sole for dancers who want a little more shoe without actually wearing more shoe. It keeps the open arch, exposed heel and close floor relationship, but gives the working forefoot a more robust leather shell.
