The So Danca BAE11 Leather Ballet Shoes combine the durability and naturally adaptable feel of leather with the flexibility of a hybrid split sole construction. Soft leather surrounds the foot, while a stretch nylon/spandex insert beneath the arch allows greater freedom through pointed positions and helps the shoe follow the movement of the foot.

Like its canvas sister style, BAE13, the elastics are partially attached for personalised placement. Dancers can choose their preferred strap position and tension before stitching them securely into place, a traditional detail that gives BAE11 a genuinely personalised fit.

BAE11 takes the clever hybrid construction of BAE13 and gives it a different character through soft leather. Where traditional canvas retains more of its original shape, leather gradually softens and adapts with wear, creating a ballet shoe that becomes increasingly personal to the dancer's foot.

The stretch section beneath the arch prevents the shoe from feeling like a completely traditional leather slipper. Combined with the split sole, it gives the middle of the foot freedom to move and articulate while the leather upper provides the durability and familiar tactile feel many dancers still prefer.

The smooth leather upper is soft yet durable, making BAE11 particularly appealing for dancers who want a ballet shoe capable of handling regular studio use. Unlike non-stretch canvas, leather naturally becomes more supple with wear and gradually begins to mould around the individual contours of the foot.

Underneath, separate suede forefoot and heel pads create the split sole construction, allowing greater freedom through the middle of the foot than a traditional continuous leather sole.

Between those sole sections sits a stretch nylon/spandex arch panel. This flexible insert allows the centre of the shoe to move more freely with the foot, helping the shoe follow the arch through tendu, relevé and pointed positions rather than creating unnecessary resistance beneath the midfoot.

The elastics are intentionally partially attached. Rather than accepting a predetermined factory position, dancers can place and tension the straps according to their own instep and preference before stitching them securely into place.

BAE11 therefore sits in an interesting middle ground: more traditional and durable than a modern stretch canvas slipper, but considerably more flexible through the arch than an old-fashioned leather ballet shoe.

Give the leather a little time before judging the final feel. BAE11 won't behave exactly like a stretch canvas shoe straight from the box. The leather gradually softens and begins to mould around the foot, while the stretch arch panel provides flexibility from the beginning.

Don't sew the elastics until you're completely happy with the shoe size. Try both shoes on, stand and move through a few basic positions, then decide where each elastic sits most comfortably across your instep before marking and sewing it securely into place.
