Size & Fit Advice

All shoes are displayed in UK sizes. The size printed on the shoe or box may differ due to the manufacturer's international sizing system.

Close fit essential – start ½ size down from the measured foot.

JZ44 runs slightly generous and its stretch upper adapts readily around the foot. Because there is very little structure connecting the forefoot and heel, we prefer a particularly secure fit.

Some young dancers may prefer true to measured size, depending on foot shape. We would not recommend sizing up for growing room in this style.

Always start with the child's measured foot, rather than their everyday shoe size.

Most importantly, check the heel. It should remain securely aligned when the dancer walks, points and rises through the foot. So Danca's current children's guidance likewise recommends a snug fit and sizing down

Spot clean the stretch upper with a soft damp cloth and mild detergent. Avoid soaking or machine washing.

Description

The So Danca JZ44 Children's Open Arch Jazz Shoes offer a very different feeling from a traditional children's jazz shoe. With most of the arch completely exposed, they give young dancers exceptional flexibility, ventilation and freedom to articulate the foot.

This is a more specialised choice than the classic closed jazz shoes we usually recommend first. The open construction works best when the shoe fits particularly closely, allowing the forefoot and heel sections to stay securely aligned as the dancer moves.

Made for Young Dancers Who Love Freedom Through the Foot

JZ44 removes much of the material normally found beneath and around the arch. A soft stretch nylon/spandex upper holds the shoe around the foot, while the open centre allows the arch to point, flex and move with almost no restriction.

Underneath, the construction is equally unusual. A suede forefoot pad allows smoother turns and pivots, while the separate rubber heel provides a more secure contact point at the back of the foot.

Available in Black and Caramel, JZ44 can work across jazz, contemporary and lyrical training. As always, check your dance school's required shoe style and colour before ordering.

Is an Open-Arch Jazz Shoe Right for My Child?

An open-arch jazz shoe gives the foot considerably more freedom than a traditional closed jazz shoe. There is very little material through the centre, allowing the arch to point and flex without the shoe resisting it.

That freedom also means there is less shoe physically holding the forefoot and heel together. For this reason, we particularly like JZ44 for young dancers who already have some dance experience and are comfortable controlling a very flexible shoe.

For a child's very first pair of jazz shoes, we would usually start with a more conventional closed style unless their teacher has specifically requested an open-arch shoe. JZ44 becomes much more interesting when a dancer wants greater articulation, smoother turns and a more barefoot-like studio feel.

Dance World Tip

Watch the heel rather than looking only at the toes. JZ44's open construction means an overly generous shoe can allow the heel section to move or twist independently from the foot.

How Should Children's JZ44 Jazz Shoes Fit?

JZ44 needs a particularly close fit. The stretch upper will adapt around the foot, but because the arch is open, extra length can make the heel much less secure.

Always measure your child's feet rather than using their current school shoe or trainer size.

Depending on foot shape, some young dancers may prefer true to measured size. We would not recommend sizing up simply to allow growing room in this particular style.

Quick fit check: Ask your child to stand, walk, point and rise through the foot. The toes should lie comfortably, but the heel section should stay aligned with the heel rather than lifting, rotating or twisting away from it.

Dance World Size Guide is intended as a helpful starting point. Every child's feet are unique, so fit may vary depending on foot shape, width, growth and individual proportions.

JZ44 isn't a style where we recommend adding generous growing room. Its open construction works best when the shoe moves closely with the dancer's foot.
