Size & Fit Advice

All shoes are displayed in UK sizes. The size printed on the shoe or box may differ due to the manufacturer's international sizing system.

The So Danca BAE13 fits small and follows the same Dance World sizing approach as BAE23.

First Ballet Shoes & Younger Dancers
Approximately 1.5-2 UK sizes above measured foot length is our usual starting point for comfortable growing room.

BAE13 Fit Note
Check the complete shoe fit before sewing the elastics. Toes should lie naturally, the heel should remain reasonably secure and there should not be excessive loose fabric around the foot.
The elastic allows you to personalise how securely the shoe sits across the foot, but it should not be used to correct an incorrectly sized shoe.

Description

The So Danca BAE13 Children's Canvas Ballet Shoes combine the familiar feel of a traditional canvas ballet slipper with a little more flexibility underneath the arch. A split suede sole allows developing feet to move freely, while a stretch nylon insert through the middle of the shoe helps it follow the foot more naturally through pointed positions.

Unlike many modern ballet shoes, the elastics are partially attached. This means they need to be positioned and stitched before the shoes are worn to class, but it also allows the placement and tension to be adjusted to suit the individual dancer. Available in Pink, White and Black, BAE13 is a traditional, affordable ballet shoe with a genuinely useful custom-fit detail.

Made for Growing Dancers

BAE13 has the straightforward character of a traditional canvas ballet shoe, but the construction underneath the arch gives it a little more freedom than a completely conventional canvas slipper.

The suede forefoot and heel pads are separated by a flexible stretch nylon section, allowing the middle of the foot to move more freely as young dancers point, flex and articulate through their feet. A soft cotton lining keeps the inside comfortable for regular classes.

What really distinguishes BAE13, however, are the partially attached elastics. Instead of deciding the strap position at the factory, So Danca leaves the elastic unattached so it can be positioned for the individual dancer before being securely sewn into place.

Why Aren't the Elastics Sewn On?

Don't worry - nothing is missing from your new ballet shoes. The BAE13 elastics are intentionally supplied partially attached.

Traditionally, ballet shoe elastics were often attached by the dancer rather than at the factory. This allows the strap to be positioned according to the individual foot and adjusted to a comfortable tension before being stitched permanently into place.

Why can that be useful?
Every child's instep and foot shape is slightly different. Being able to choose the elastic position can help the shoe sit securely without making the strap unnecessarily tight across the foot.

Before sewing:
Have your child put both ballet shoes on and check that the size is correct first. Position the elastic so the shoe feels secure without pulling tightly into the skin, then mark the placement before removing the shoe for sewing.

Dance World Tip: Always check the shoe size before sewing the elastics. Once elastics have been cut or sewn onto ballet shoes, returning or exchanging them may not be possible.

How should the BAE13 fit?

BAE13 follows the same small-fitting approach we use for the traditional BAE23 canvas shoe. Start with your child's measured foot length rather than relying on their everyday shoe size.

Choose approximately 1.5-2 UK sizes larger

The toes should lie naturally without curling, while the heel should remain reasonably secure. Avoid adding excessive growing room simply because this is a canvas shoe, too much length can leave loose fabric around the front of the foot and reduce control.

Important: Fit the ballet shoes fully before sewing the elastics. The elastic should secure an already correctly fitted shoe rather than being used to compensate for a shoe that is too large.

Dance World Size Guide is intended as a helpful starting point rather than a guarantee of fit. Every child's feet are different, and the ideal size may vary depending on foot shape, width, growth and personal preference.

Dance World Junior™ Verdict

The So Danca BAE13 is a traditional ballet shoe with one particularly useful advantage, you decide where the elastic sits. Its canvas upper and split suede sole keep the shoe familiar and straightforward, while the flexible stretch insert beneath the arch gives developing feet useful freedom of movement.

For parents happy to do a little sewing before the first class, BAE13 offers a simple, affordable ballet shoe with more opportunity to personalise the fit than many modern pre-sewn styles.
