Never choose a dance shoe from conversion alone. Ballet, jazz, ballroom and character shoes can fit very differently depending on the last, upper material, width and intended level of compression. Use this table to understand international equivalents, then follow the fit advice for the individual shoe.
How to Measure Your Feet for Dance Shoes
Measure both feet while standing, preferably later in the day. Use the longer foot when comparing your measurement with a shoe size chart.
Foot Length
Key MeasurementStand with your heel lightly against a wall and place your foot flat on a sheet of paper. Mark the end of your longest toe and measure the distance from the wall to the mark.
Measure in centimetres for the most accurate comparison with international shoe charts.
Measure Both Feet
Repeat the measurement on the other foot. It is very common for one foot to be slightly longer than the other, so always use the larger measurement when choosing your starting size.
Foot Width
Measure across or around the widest part of the forefoot. Width can be just as important as length in dance shoes, particularly in fitted ballet, jazz and ballroom styles.
Measure While Standing
Take measurements with your full weight on your feet. Standing allows the foot to spread naturally and gives a more realistic measurement than measuring while sitting.
Check the Dance Fit
A correctly fitted dance shoe should feel secure without restricting the toes or causing pressure. Different dance disciplines require different amounts of growing room, compression and heel security, so always follow the model-specific Dance World Fit Advice.

The tonal combination of soft nubuck, semi-sheer mesh and black lacing lets the different textures create the detail rather than relying on sparkle or contrast. On the foot it has an almost corset-inspired silhouette - dramatic enough to feel special, but still incredibly easy to style with practicewear, trousers, skirts and evening social-dance looks.
PortDance PD819 Social Dance Booties – Design & Performance
The standout feature of PD819 is its ankle-height lace-up construction. Unlike a conventional Latin sandal that secures the foot with only a few narrow straps, the bootie wraps much more of the foot and ankle. Front lacing allows the fit to be adjusted through the instep, while the back zipper means dancers do not need to completely relace the shoe every time it is worn.
PortDance combines soft black nubuck with breathable mesh panels, giving the upper a supportive framework without making the bootie feel visually or physically too enclosed. The mesh also allows airflow through a style that naturally covers more of the foot than a standard sandal.
The open toe keeps the forefoot connected to its Latin identity, allowing the toes to sit naturally at the front of the shoe while maintaining a more expressive line than a fully enclosed boot.
Underfoot, a cushioned insole helps soften repeated impact during longer sessions, while the suede dance sole provides the controlled glide required for turns, pivots and travelling movement. Start with your usual ballroom or Latin dance-shoe size. PD819 should fit closely around the foot without requiring the laces to be pulled excessively tight.
Adjustable Instep
The lace-up front is particularly useful for fine-tuning the fit through the instep. Adjust gradually from the lower eyelets upwards rather than tightening only at the ankle.
Open-Toe Position
Your toes should sit comfortably towards the front of the shoe without curling or leaving excessive space beyond them.
