International shoe sizes can vary slightly between brands and models. Use your measured foot length as the best starting point, then compare it with the individual brand's size recommendation. Where a product page gives model-specific sizing advice, that guidance should always take priority over a general conversion chart.

Never choose a dance shoe from conversion alone. Ballet, jazz, ballroom and character shoes can fit very differently depending on the last, upper material, width and intended level of compression. Use this table to understand international equivalents, then follow the fit advice for the individual shoe.
How to Measure Your Feet for Dance Shoes
Measure both feet while standing, preferably later in the day. Use the longer foot when comparing your measurement with a shoe size chart.
Foot Length
Key MeasurementStand with your heel lightly against a wall and place your foot flat on a sheet of paper. Mark the end of your longest toe and measure the distance from the wall to the mark.
Measure in centimetres for the most accurate comparison with international shoe charts.
Measure Both Feet
Repeat the measurement on the other foot. It is very common for one foot to be slightly longer than the other, so always use the larger measurement when choosing your starting size.
Foot Width
Measure across or around the widest part of the forefoot. Width can be just as important as length in dance shoes, particularly in fitted ballet, jazz and ballroom styles.
Measure While Standing
Take measurements with your full weight on your feet. Standing allows the foot to spread naturally and gives a more realistic measurement than measuring while sitting.
Check the Dance Fit
A correctly fitted dance shoe should feel secure without restricting the toes or causing pressure. Different dance disciplines require different amounts of growing room, compression and heel security, so always follow the model-specific Dance World Fit Advice.
This chart is designed as an international reference rather than a replacement for individual brand sizing. Bloch, Capezio, So Danca, IDS, PortDance, Diamant and other dance footwear brands may use their own conversion systems or fit differently from standard street shoes. Always use the individual product's Dance World Fit Advice where available.

Best For: Beginner Irish Dance • First Classes • Weekly Training • Grade Examinations • First Feiseanna
Description
Description
Light, traditional and beautifully uncomplicated, the Goleen Aisling GL32 Irish Dancing Pumps are designed to support dancers through the beginning of their Irish dancing journey. Soft full-grain leather, a flexible full sole and classic ghillie lacing create a secure first pump without introducing the pre-shaped arch or additional cushioning found in more advanced styles.
Aisling means “dream” or “vision” in Irish, a lovely name for a shoe made for first classes, early examinations and those unforgettable first feiseanna.
Personality
Traditional • Honest • Flexible • Beginner-Focused
Aisling has the clean, traditional appearance expected from a classic black Irish dancing pump. Its simple full-sole construction keeps the shoe appropriate for class uniforms, examinations and early competitive milestones while allowing the dancer’s own feet to develop naturally through training.
Goleen Aisling GL32 Irish Dancing Pumps – Design & Performance
The Aisling GL32 is deliberately designed as a first Irish dancing pump. Its soft full-grain leather upper sits neatly around the foot and gradually becomes more personal with wear, while the traditional ghillie construction allows the fit to be adjusted securely through the arch and instep.
Five leather lace loops on each side help distribute the tension more evenly across the foot. This creates a close, adjustable hold without relying on elasticated panels or a heavily shaped upper. At the back, a reinforced stitched heel counter helps the pump remain securely positioned as the dancer practises pointing, rising and early footwork.
Underneath, the flat full leather sole provides a traditional connection with the floor. There is no pre-arched last and no built-in cushioning, allowing beginners to learn how to work through their own feet rather than having the shoe create an advanced competition shape for them.
The result is a light and flexible beginner pump that supports early technique while remaining honest about its purpose: this is a shoe for learning, strengthening and building confidence before progressing into a more shaped or cushioned style.

The Dance World Irish Pump DNA™ compares the defining characteristics of every Irish dancing pump. A higher score does not necessarily mean a better shoe - it shows the balance of comfort, flexibility, arch definition, cushioning and floor feel so dancers can choose the model best suited to their training and performance needs.
Dance World Notes
A very honest first pump: Aisling does not try to create an advanced competition arch before the dancer is ready. It gives beginners a traditional shoe in which they can learn to use and strengthen their own feet.
Made for early milestones: This is the shoe for first classes, early grade examinations and first feiseanna. When training becomes longer and more demanding, the dancer can progress into a more cushioned and pre-arched pump such as the Goleen GL42 Aria.
Traditional without feeling heavy: The full leather sole provides the structure expected from a beginner pump, while the soft upper and flexible construction keep the overall feel light and manageable.
Dance World Tip – Choose a neat fit, not generous growing room. A little practical room can be useful for a growing dancer, but the heel and arch should still sit closely around the foot. The toes should lightly meet the front without curling. If the pump bags, twists or slips when the dancer points, it is likely too generous.
Goleen Aisling GL32 Dance World Fit Advice
Comfortably snug. Neat through the heel and arch.
The Aisling is made from soft full-grain leather that will gradually conform to the dancer’s foot. It should feel secure from the beginning, with the upper sitting neatly around the toes, arch and heel.
For growing dancers, we generally recommend approximately ½–1 UK size above the dancer’s measured foot size. Always measure the foot and use the individual Goleen size chart as the starting point rather than relying on the child’s current everyday shoes, which may already include growing room.
For beginner adults, we recommend beginning with the dancer’s true measured foot size and aiming for a close but comfortable fit. The toes should lightly meet the front without feeling painfully compressed, and the heel should remain securely held when walking, pointing and rising through the foot.
Dance World Fit Note: Always begin with the dancer’s measured foot and the individual Goleen size chart. Do not calculate from everyday shoe size, as those shoes may already include growing room. Add only the amount recommended for the dancer’s level, foot shape and intended fit.
Fit advice is a guide only. Foot shape, width, teacher preference and the dancer’s stage of training can affect the most appropriate fit. For a young beginner, we recommend asking their Irish dancing teacher to check the pumps before they are fully worn.
