Before Choosing Your Size

Take dancewear measurements over underwear or close-fitting clothing using a flexible tape measure. For shoes, measure both feet while standing and use the longer foot as your starting point.

Bust / Chest Measure around the fullest part of the chest, keeping the tape straight and level around the body.

Waist Measure around the natural waist, usually the narrowest part of the torso.

Hips Measure around the fullest part of the hips and seat, keeping the tape level.

Girth Start at one shoulder, measure down the front of the torso, through the crotch and back to the same shoulder in one continuous loop.

Foot Length Measure from heel to longest toe while standing. Measure both feet and use the longer measurement.

Left & Right Leather Ballet Shoes

Most children's leather ballet shoes don't have a separate left and right foot when they're brand new. Instead, they're designed with a universal shape that gradually moulds to each foot as they're worn.

After a few ballet classes, it's a good idea to write L and R inside the shoes so your child continues wearing the same shoe on the same foot. This helps the leather keep its natural shape and makes the shoes even more comfortable over time.

How should children's ballet shoes fit?

Ballet shoes fit differently from everyday school shoes. School shoes already include growing room, while ballet shoes are designed to fit much closer to the foot for comfort, control and safe movement.

For the most accurate fit, always measure your child's feet rather than using their current school shoe size.

Most students are happier with approximately one UK size above their measured foot length, while younger children usually benefit from one additional size to allow sensible growing room.

As a general starting point, we recommend approximately 1½–2 UK sizes above your child's measured foot length. This provides a comfortable ballet fit while allowing growing feet the room they need.
