The So Danca BAE11 fits small and has a more substantial initial feel than a canvas ballet shoe. The leather gradually softens and becomes more accommodating through regular wear. The current children's listing also describes the model as very small fitting.

After class, allow leather ballet shoes to air naturally rather than leaving them closed inside a dance bag.

For light cleaning, the current care instructions recommend a damp cloth with mild soap, followed by natural air drying away from direct sunlight. Avoid bleach, fabric softeners and harsh chemicals.

The So Danca BAE11 Children's Leather Ballet Shoes combine the durability of a traditional leather ballet slipper with a more flexible hybrid split sole construction. Soft leather surrounds the foot and gradually becomes more supple with wear, while a stretch nylon/spandex insert beneath the arch helps developing feet move naturally through pointed positions.

Like its canvas sister style BAE13, the elastics are partially attached. This allows the strap position and tension to be adjusted for the individual dancer before being stitched securely into place. It's a traditional detail that makes BAE11 particularly useful for parents and dancers who prefer a more personalised fit.

Made for Growing Dancers

Leather gives BAE11 a different character from a traditional canvas ballet shoe. It initially feels a little more substantial around the foot, but gradually softens and becomes more personal with wear. For children attending regular classes, that combination of durability and adaptability can be particularly useful.

The split suede sole keeps the shoe flexible underneath the foot, while the stretch insert through the arch allows greater freedom as young dancers point and articulate their feet. A breathable cotton lining adds softness inside for regular studio wear.

Leather Feels Different - Should I Buy Growing Room?

Yes - growing children need sensible room in their ballet shoes, but don't deliberately buy leather ballet shoes very loose because you expect your child to grow into them.

Leather behaves differently from canvas. When new, it can feel a little more substantial around the foot. With regular wear it gradually softens and begins to mould more closely to the dancer's individual shape.

What should you look for?
Your child's toes should lie naturally without curling or being compressed. There should be sensible growing room at the front, while the heel and sides of the shoe should still feel reasonably secure.

What should you avoid?
Don't add so much room that the foot slides inside the shoe or the leather visibly bags around it. Leather becoming softer with wear doesn't mean an oversized shoe will eventually become the correct size.

Dance World Tip: Think comfortable now + sensible room to grow, rather than buying a shoe that is obviously too large. The leather will become softer with wear, but the overall shoe length won't become smaller.

How should the BAE11 fit?

BAE11 fits small, so begin with your child's measured foot length rather than relying only on their everyday shoe size.

Choose approximately 1½–2 UK sizes larger

A new pair should feel comfortably secure without crushing the toes. Remember that the leather will soften and become more accommodating with wear, so don't automatically move to a larger size simply because it initially feels more substantial than canvas.

Important: Always confirm the complete shoe fit before sewing the elastics. The elastic should secure an already correctly fitted shoe rather than compensate for one that is too large.
