The Alpha Shock style is intended to be a very snug fit. Intended for those dancers that like buying their dance shoes nice and snug or for customers that may have narrow feet and like their socks to fit snugly.
This is to eliminate the annoyance of floppy toes in traditional footwear that don’t fit your foot well.
The Alpha’s snug fit in the toes helps accentuate the entire foot and is light but effective in providing support, reducing pain, fatigue and inflammation.

Materials & Construction

Alpha uses a technical knitted construction engineered around 20–30 mmHg graduated compression, with targeted support through the plantar/arch and ankle areas.

The traction version features Apolla's refreshable grip technology. The grip begins stronger and gradually breaks in through wear, allowing the floor feel to become more personalised over time.

The technical fibres are designed for stretch retention, moisture management, odour control and repeated wear.

How Traction Works

How does the traction/grip work?

The Alpha Shock features refreshable grip technology. It starts sticky, giving you the traction of a pirouette shoe or a turner.
Apolla Grip Socks, like our Performance Shock, offer a revolutionary approach to traction. Unlike traditional dance shoes with fixed grip, Apolla's patented grip is customizable, allowing dancers to control challenging dance moves.

Here's how it works:
Initial Grip: The grip starts strong and sticky. This allows you to experience maximum traction from the moment you put them on.

Break-In Period: After a few uses, the grip will naturally wear down to your preferred level of traction allowing you to turn and glide smoothly. This break-in period allows you to personalize the grip to your individual dance style and the type of floor you dance on.

Grip Location: It's important to note that for The Performance Shock (and The Infinite sock profiles), the grip is located only on the ball of the foot, allowing for a combination of grip and freedom for pirouettes and control challenging technique. This differs from our AMP no-show profile, that has grip on the ball of the foot and heel strategically positioned to mimic a jazz shoe.

Refreshing the Grip: Once the grip has worn down to your liking, you can refresh it using our E6000 spray adhesive. This non-toxic spray reactivates the grip, allowing you to maintain your desired level of traction for the life of the sock.

Customization: You have complete control over your grip! If you prefer a stickier feel, refresh the grip more often. If you prefer less grip, allow the socks to wear down further before refreshing. Some dancers even use rosin, spray rosin, or hairspray for different levels of grip.

This process allows you to tailor the grip to your specific needs. You'll experience the perfect balance of control and freedom, whether you're turning, sliding, or performing any other movement.

Remember, it's essential to purchase the E6000 spray adhesive to refresh your grip and ensure optimal performance.

Care information

Keep your toenails clipped short to prevent unnecessary wear or damage to the fabric.
Avoid wearing the Shocks on rough surfaces like concrete or areas that could snag the material.

Washing Instruction:
Wash on a gentle machine cycle, preferably inside a mesh laundry bag.
Avoid bleach, harsh detergents and fabric softener, which can affect the technical fibres and traction performance.

Best For: Contemporary • Lyrical • Modern • Turns & Pirouettes • Acro • Long Rehearsals • Dancers Wanting More Support

Description

Part dance sock, part contemporary half sole, the Apolla Alpha Shock with Traction takes the freedom dancers love about minimalist turners and adds something traditional half soles rarely provide: genuine targeted compression and support.

The snug knitted construction wraps closely around the toes, arch and ankle while leaving the heel exposed for direct floor connection. Underneath, Apolla's traction technology adds controlled grip for turns and directional movement, creating an unusually technical alternative to the traditional canvas half sole.

Apolla Alpha Shock Half Sole – Personality

Targeted Compression • Barefoot Connection • Traction Control • Serious Support

The half sole with a completely different point of view. Alpha keeps the minimal coverage and articulation dancers expect from contemporary footwear, but replaces traditional canvas-and-elastic construction with a supportive compression knit that hugs the foot closely.

Nude keeps the look subtle and barefoot-inspired, while Black gives Alpha a stronger, more technical studio feel.

Apolla Alpha Shock Compression Half Sole – Design & Performance

Alpha's biggest difference is what happens around the foot rather than underneath it. Apolla uses 20–30 mmHg graduated compression with targeted support through the arch and ankle, creating a much more connected and supported sensation than a conventional half sole.

The close knitted toe section is intentionally snug, helping eliminate excess fabric around the toes while preserving articulation and a clean foot line. The heel remains completely open, maintaining direct skin-to-floor contact and much of the sensory feedback dancers associate with barefoot contemporary work.

Underneath, the customisable traction surface is designed to change with the dancer. It begins noticeably grippy, then gradually breaks in as you dance until you reach the balance of grip and glide that feels right for your movement and studio floor. Once you've found your preferred traction level, it can be maintained or rebuilt using E6000 Traction Spray rather than simply accepting that the grip is gone.

The result is an unusual combination: the flexibility and visual minimalism of a half sole, the close fit of technical dance hosiery and significantly more compression support than dancers would normally expect from either.

Apolla Alpha Shock Contemporary Footwear DNA™

Our Dance World Footwear DNA™ highlights the five characteristics that define how Contemporary footwear feels.

Floor Feel ●●●●○ Open heel preserves direct floor connection while the knitted forefoot adds light separation.
Turn Control ●●●●● Refreshable traction creates strong control that gradually adapts as the grip breaks in.
Flexibility ●●●●● Flexible knitted construction follows the toes and arch without a rigid turning pad.
Protection ●●●○○ Forefoot coverage protects key contact areas while the heel remains deliberately exposed.
Support ●●●●● 20–30 mmHg compression provides substantial targeted support through the arch and ankle.

Higher score ≠ better. Dance World Contemporary Footwear DNA™ shows the balance and feel of the footwear, helping dancers compare different constructions and choose what suits their movement and floorwork.

Dance World Notes – Apolla Alpha Shock

The supportive half-sole alternative.

The biggest surprise is how different Alpha feels from a conventional turner. The open heel still gives you that familiar contemporary floor connection, but the compression around the arch makes the rest of the foot feel considerably more held and connected.

The traction is surprisingly personal. Rather than expecting every dancer to work with exactly the same grip, Alpha is designed to break in until it reaches the level you like. Once it becomes slicker than you want, E6000 Traction Spray lets you build the grip back up again, so you can keep adjusting that balance between freedom and control to suit your floor and movement.

Refresh your Apolla traction with E6000 Spray

Our overall impression: Alpha is for the dancer who likes the freedom of a traditional half sole but wishes it did more. The compression gives you support, the open heel preserves floor connection, and the adjustable traction means the grip doesn't have to stay exactly as it felt on day one.
