How to Measure Your Feet for Dance Shoes

Measure both feet while standing, preferably later in the day. Use the longer foot when comparing your measurement with a shoe size chart.

Foot Length

Key Measurement

Stand with your heel lightly against a wall and place your foot flat on a sheet of paper. Mark the end of your longest toe and measure the distance from the wall to the mark.

Measure in centimetres for the most accurate comparison with international shoe charts.

Measure Both Feet

Repeat the measurement on the other foot. It is very common for one foot to be slightly longer than the other, so always use the larger measurement when choosing your starting size.

Foot Width

Measure across or around the widest part of the forefoot. Width can be just as important as length in dance shoes, particularly in fitted ballet, jazz and ballroom styles.

Measure While Standing

Take measurements with your full weight on your feet. Standing allows the foot to spread naturally and gives a more realistic measurement than measuring while sitting.

Check the Dance Fit

A correctly fitted dance shoe should feel secure without restricting the toes or causing pressure. Different dance disciplines require different amounts of growing room, compression and heel security, so always follow the model-specific Dance World Fit Advice.

Using This Conversion Guide

This chart is designed as an international reference rather than a replacement for individual brand sizing. Bloch, Capezio, So Danca, IDS, PortDance, Diamant and other dance footwear brands may use their own conversion systems or fit differently from standard street shoes. Always use the individual product's Dance World Fit Advice where available.

The Goleen Aisling GL32 Children’s Irish Dancing Pumps are traditional first pumps designed to support young dancers as they begin learning Irish dance. Soft full-grain leather combines with a flexible full leather sole and adjustable ghillie lacing, creating a light, secure shoe for those important early steps.

Aisling means “dream” or “vision” in Irish, a lovely name for a pump made for first classes, early examinations and the excitement of a dancer’s first feis.

A young dancer’s first pumps should sit neatly around the foot without trying to create an advanced competition shape before they are ready. The Aisling GL32 has a natural, non-pre-arched construction, allowing children to learn how to point, rise and work through their own feet as their strength and technique develop.

The soft leather upper gradually becomes more personal with wear, while five leather lace loops on each side allow the fit to be adjusted securely across the arch and instep. A reinforced heel helps keep the back of the shoe in place, and the traditional full leather sole provides a clear, natural connection with the floor.

Why Does a Beginner Pump Feel So Simple?

The Aisling GL32 does not contain a pre-shaped arch or thick built-in cushioning. This is intentional. Its traditional construction allows beginners to feel the floor and learn how to use and strengthen their own feet rather than relying on the shoe to create an advanced foot shape.

The full leather sole provides gentle structure beneath the entire foot, while the soft upper remains flexible enough for early pointing and footwork.

As training becomes longer and more demanding, the dancer can progress into a more cushioned and pre-arched pump such as the Goleen GL42 Aria.

How Should Children’s Irish Dancing Pumps Fit?

Irish dancing pumps should fit much closer than everyday trainers or school shoes. The leather should sit neatly around the toes, arch and heel without visible bagging or loose material.

The toes should lightly meet the front of the pump without curling, while the heel should remain securely held as your child walks, points and rises through the foot.

Always measure your child’s foot rather than using their current everyday shoe size. Everyday shoes may already contain growing room, so sizing up from them can accidentally add growing room twice.

For the Aisling GL32, we generally recommend approximately ½–1 UK size above the dancer’s measured foot size. Use the individual Goleen size chart as the starting point and allow only a small amount of practical growing room.

Quick fit check: Ask your child to walk, point both feet and rise onto the toes. The pump should stay connected to the foot without the heel lifting, the upper twisting or the leather bagging around the arch.
