Never choose a dance shoe from conversion alone. Ballet, jazz, ballroom and character shoes can fit very differently depending on the last, upper material, width and intended level of compression. Use this table to understand international equivalents, then follow the fit advice for the individual shoe.
How to Measure Your Feet for Dance Shoes
Measure both feet while standing, preferably later in the day. Use the longer foot when comparing your measurement with a shoe size chart.
Foot Length
Key MeasurementStand with your heel lightly against a wall and place your foot flat on a sheet of paper. Mark the end of your longest toe and measure the distance from the wall to the mark.
Measure in centimetres for the most accurate comparison with international shoe charts.
Measure Both Feet
Repeat the measurement on the other foot. It is very common for one foot to be slightly longer than the other, so always use the larger measurement when choosing your starting size.
Foot Width
Measure across or around the widest part of the forefoot. Width can be just as important as length in dance shoes, particularly in fitted ballet, jazz and ballroom styles.
Measure While Standing
Take measurements with your full weight on your feet. Standing allows the foot to spread naturally and gives a more realistic measurement than measuring while sitting.
Check the Dance Fit
A correctly fitted dance shoe should feel secure without restricting the toes or causing pressure. Different dance disciplines require different amounts of growing room, compression and heel security, so always follow the model-specific Dance World Fit Advice.
This chart is designed as an international reference rather than a replacement for individual brand sizing. Bloch, Capezio, So Danca, IDS, PortDance, Diamant and other dance footwear brands may use their own conversion systems or fit differently from standard street shoes. Always use the individual product's Dance World Fit Advice where available.

Ember is designed to make a dancer’s first hard-shoe experience feel exciting rather than intimidating. It does not imitate an ultra-flexible championship shoe; it gives a developing foot the stable base it needs to learn rhythm, placement and control, while avoiding the harsh break-in commonly associated with a traditional new jig shoe.
Goleen Ember GL50 Jig Shoes – Design & Performance
The Ember GL50 is Goleen’s beginner hard shoe, created for dancers moving from soft shoes into their first trebles, drums and hard-shoe rhythms. Its full leather sole is deliberately engineered stiff, giving the developing foot structural support while it learns how to work through the forefoot with control.
Inside, the Featherflexi™ insole is lightweight and contoured for the developing foot. It is calibrated with the sole beneath it, providing a more considered underfoot feel without adding unnecessary bulk or making a first hard shoe overly soft.
At the front, the EchoDrive™ tip is precision-moulded from high-density resin to create a bright, crisp strike. At the heel, the EchoBase™ system uses a resin striking plate bonded to a solid heel block, producing a clean, defined drum.
These components are tonally matched, helping the front and heel of the shoe speak with one clear, balanced voice. This is especially helpful in the early stages, when dancers are learning to hear, repeat and refine each individual beat.
The soft full-grain leather upper and deliberately soft toe box are equally purposeful. Ember is made for beginners learning trebles and drums, not yet standing on the tip. The shoe is soft from the first lace-up and should be allowed to settle naturally through normal class wear, without soaking, heat or forced bending.
A traditional four-eyelet lace-up front and single buckle ankle strap allow the shoe to be adjusted securely around the foot, helping the heel remain seated during early hard-shoe movement.

A higher score does not necessarily mean a better shoe - it shows the balance of sound projection, flexibility, lightness, support and break-in ease so dancers can choose the construction best suited to their level, technique and training needs.
Dance World Notes
Structure where a beginner needs it: Ember’s sole is deliberately firm beneath the foot. This is not resistance for its own sake; it gives a developing dancer a stable base while learning how to point, lift, land and control hard-shoe movement.
Soft toe box, honest progression: The toe box is intentionally soft because this shoe is made for trebles and drums, not for a dancer already working regularly on toe stands. When technique and strength progress, the dancer can move into a more specialised hard-shoe construction with teacher guidance.
Dance World Tip – Let Ember settle naturally. This shoe is supplied soft from the first lace-up. Do not soak it, use heat, force the sole to bend or try to accelerate its break-in; normal controlled class wear is all it needs.
Goleen Ember GL50 Dance World Fit Advice
Secure through the heel. Natural through the toes. Supported beneath the foot.
Ember should fit closely and securely without painful compression. The toes should lie naturally inside the shoe, with the longest toe reaching close to the front without being tightly curled or pressed hard against the tip.
Hard shoes should be checked while standing, walking and rising on a clean, protected surface. Keep the tips, heels and sole completely unmarked until the fit has been approved.
