How to Measure for The Zone Gymnastics Leotards

Measure over underwear or close-fitting clothing using a flexible tape measure. Stand naturally and keep the tape comfortably against the body without pulling it tight.

Girth

Key Measurement

Using a flexible tape measure, start at the centre of one shoulder. Bring the tape down the front of the torso, through the crotch and back up to the same shoulder, creating one complete loop.

Keep the tape comfortably close to the body without pulling it tight. Girth is especially useful when choosing between two leotard sizes.

Chest

Measure around the fullest part of the chest, keeping the tape straight and level around the body. The tape should sit comfortably without compressing the chest.

Waist

Measure around the natural waist, usually the narrowest part of the torso. Keep the tape level and comfortably close to the body.

Hips

Measure around the fullest part of the hips and seat while standing naturally. Keep the tape level all the way around.

Hips are not included in this particular The Zone size table, but they can still be useful when checking overall body proportions and leotard coverage.

Height

Stand straight without shoes, with feet flat on the floor, and measure from the floor to the top of the head.

The Zone Fit Guidance

The Zone uses numbered gymnastics sizes rather than standard clothing sizes. Current girls' styles commonly progress from size 24 for younger children through sizes 26, 28, 30 and 32, with size 34 moving into Women's Small on many models. Use age only as a guide and prioritise actual body measurements, particularly girth, when choosing a leotard.

Does More Spandex Mean a Tighter Fit?

Spandex, also called elastane, is the fibre that gives a fabric stretch. Wisp contains 31% spandex, but the percentage alone does not tell you how tight a finished leotard will feel. Its cut, fabric construction and chosen size all contribute to the fit.

Choose the size from body measurements, including torso girth. Check that your child can reach upwards and bend comfortably, with no digging at the shoulders or leg openings. A stretchy fabric still needs enough length through the body, so avoid choosing a smaller size simply because the material stretches.
