For Mara leotards, girth is one of the most useful measurements because it reflects the dancer's full torso length. If your measurements fall across different sizes, pay particular attention to girth. Dancers with a longer torso may be more comfortable in the larger size.

How to Measure for Mara Dancewear
Measure over underwear or close-fitting clothing using a flexible tape measure. Stand naturally and keep the tape comfortably against the body without pulling it tight.
Girth
Key MeasurementUsing a flexible tape measure, start at the centre of one shoulder. Bring the tape down the front of the torso, through the crotch and back up the body to the same shoulder, creating one complete loop.
Keep the tape comfortably close to the body without pulling it tight. The dancer should stand naturally while being measured.
Chest
Measure around the fullest part of the chest, keeping the tape straight and level around the body. Keep the tape comfortably against the body without compressing it.
Waist
Measure around the natural waist, usually the narrowest part of the torso. Keep the tape level and do not pull it too tightly.
Hips
Measure around the fullest part of the hips and seat while standing naturally. Keep the tape level all the way around the body.
Height
Stand straight without shoes, with feet flat on the floor, and measure from the floor to the top of the head.
Mara Dancewear uses different size structures depending on the garment. For leotards, compare chest, waist, hips and especially girth. For skirts, waist and hips are the most useful measurements. For warm-up pants, use waist and hips together with Mara's height guidance to choose between XS/S and M/L.

Not every studio favourite has to be purely practical. The Mara Dancewear Short Velvet Ballet Skirt brings something a little more special to everyday dancewear - combining an easy pull-on silhouette with beautifully soft stretch velvet that catches the light as you move.
Short, fluid and wonderfully flattering, it gives a simple leotard an entirely different personality without adding complicated ties, layers or bulk. The velvet has a soft lustrous finish rather than a theatrical feel, while the gently flared shape creates movement around the hips and leaves the legs beautifully visible.
We particularly love this one for students building a dance wardrobe they genuinely enjoy wearing. It still works for class and rehearsal, but there is a little more fashion, texture and fun here than in a traditional mesh ballet skirt.
Mara Dancewear Short Velvet Ballet Skirt – Design & Movement
The beauty of this skirt comes largely from its fabric. Mara uses a soft-touch four-way stretch velvet that moves with the body rather than behaving like traditional heavy velvet. The result is flexible, lightweight and comfortable enough for dance while retaining that unmistakable soft sheen. Mara describes the fabric as offering excellent shape retention alongside its stretch and drape.
A simple pull-on waistband keeps the waistline clean and eliminates the knot and overlapping panels of a traditional wrap skirt. The skirt sits neatly over a leotard before opening into a short, softly flared silhouette.
Because velvet reflects light differently depending on its direction and movement, the skirt changes subtly as the dancer turns. That's part of its appeal: where mesh almost disappears around the body, velvet creates texture, depth and visual presence.
The short cut still leaves plenty of leg visible for class, while the gently shaped hem creates enough movement to feel distinctly balletic rather than simply like a fashion mini skirt.

Studio Experience
Compared with Mara's short mesh skirt, the velvet version has more presence and slightly less float. The reward is a more defined silhouette. Velvet falls with a little more substance, creating a lovely soft flare rather than the airy transparency of mesh. It can also provide a little more visual coverage around the hips while keeping the leg line exposed below.
For younger vocational dancers and students, we think that balance is particularly appealing. You still have a skirt short enough for the teacher to see the working line, but it feels like a genuine addition to the outfit rather than an almost invisible layer.

This one serves a different dancer. It's for the student who opens her dance bag and wants to wear the pretty skirt. The dancer who likes matching her leotard and skirt. The teenager beginning to develop her own studio style. Or simply anyone who loves the soft sheen and tactile feel of velvet.
