Use your body measurements rather than your everyday clothing size. Mara Dancewear uses different sizing across leotards, ballet skirts and warm-up pants, so always check the chart for the garment you are choosing. If your measurements fall between sizes, consider the measurement most important for that garment and your preferred fit.
Mara Dancewear Leotard Size Chart
Use your chest, waist, hips and girth measurements to find your recommended Mara Dancewear leotard size.
| Measurement | XXS | XS | S | M | L | XL |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chest | 78–82 cm 30"–32" | 82–86 cm 32"–34" | 86–90 cm 34"–36" | 90–94 cm 36"–38" | 94–98 cm 38"–40" | 98–102 cm 40"–42" |
| Waist | 58–62 cm 22"–23" | 62–66 cm 24"–25" | 66–70 cm 26"–27" | 70–74 cm 28"–29" | 74–78 cm 30"–31" | 78–82 cm 32"–33" |

| Girth | 125–132 cm 49"–52" | 132–139 cm 52"–55" | 139–146 cm 55"–58" | 146–153 cm 58"–61" | 153–160 cm 61"–64" | 167–174 cm 64"–67" |
For Mara leotards, girth is one of the most useful measurements because it reflects the dancer's full torso length. If your measurements fall across different sizes, pay particular attention to girth. Dancers with a longer torso may be more comfortable in the larger size.

How to Measure for Mara Dancewear
Measure over underwear or close-fitting clothing using a flexible tape measure. Stand naturally and keep the tape comfortably against the body without pulling it tight.

Girth
Key MeasurementUsing a flexible tape measure, start at the centre of one shoulder. Bring the tape down the front of the torso, through the crotch and back up the body to the same shoulder, creating one complete loop.
Keep the tape comfortably close to the body without pulling it tight. The dancer should stand naturally while being measured.
Chest
Measure around the fullest part of the chest, keeping the tape straight and level around the body. Keep the tape comfortably against the body without compressing it.
Waist
Measure around the natural waist, usually the narrowest part of the torso. Keep the tape level and do not pull it too tightly.
Hips
Measure around the fullest part of the hips and seat while standing naturally. Keep the tape level all the way around the body.
Height
Stand straight without shoes, with feet flat on the floor, and measure from the floor to the top of the head.
Mara Dancewear uses different size structures depending on the garment. For leotards, compare chest, waist, hips and especially girth. For skirts, waist and hips are the most useful measurements. For warm-up pants, use waist and hips together with Mara's height guidance to choose between XS/S and M/L.

The Skirt You'll Keep Reaching For
Some dancewear is designed to make a statement. Other pieces quietly become the ones you wear again and again. The Mara Dancewear Short Mesh Ballet Skirt belongs firmly in the second category - beautifully simple, exceptionally soft and effortless to pull over almost any leotard.
Cut from Mara's fine four-way stretch mesh, the skirt feels almost weightless around the body while creating just enough movement to soften the ballet line. A gently graduated high-low silhouette keeps the legs beautifully visible at the front before falling longer through the back, giving this everyday studio staple a particularly graceful finish.
Mara Dancewear Short Mesh Ballet Skirt – Design & Movement
This is ballet simplicity done particularly well. Rather than using ties, overlapping panels or decorative detailing, Mara lets the quality and movement of the mesh create the silhouette.
The skirt measures approximately 16 inches at the front and 21 inches at the back, creating a soft high-low shape. The shorter front keeps the working line of the legs clearly visible, while the additional length through the back introduces more fluidity when walking, turning and travelling across the studio.
The soft stretch waistband sits cleanly around the waist without the bulk of a knot or wrap tie. Simply pull it over your leotard and you're ready for class. Four-way stretch through the mesh allows the fabric to move easily with the body rather than resisting movement or feeling stiff.
And because the finish is semi-sheer, the skirt adds softness without hiding the dancer underneath - exactly what we want from an everyday ballet layer.

Studio Experience
If the longer Mara skirt is about expressive rehearsal movement, this short version is about visibility, versatility and everyday wear.
The 16-inch front leaves considerably more of the leg exposed, making it easy to see placement and line during barre and centre work. Turn to the side or back and the longer 21-inch fall gives the silhouette a softer, more elegant finish than a completely straight-cut mini skirt.
That combination works particularly well for dancers who enjoy wearing a skirt through most of class but don't want lots of fabric around the legs.
It is also wonderfully uncomplicated. No ties to come loose. No knot sitting at the waist. No need to find the perfect overlap. Pull it on, adjust the waistband and dance.
Dance World Notes
- Our everyday Mara skirt. If you're choosing between the two lengths primarily for regular ballet class, we'd start here. The shorter silhouette keeps the leg line beautifully visible.
- The softness is real. Dancers repeatedly mention how soft and comfortable Mara's mesh feels, which matters when a skirt is being worn several times a week.
- Beautiful high-low proportion. Approximately 16" at the front and 21" at the back gives enough difference to create movement without turning the skirt into a full rehearsal silhouette.
- Excellent for pairing. The deliberately simple design lets an interesting leotard remain the focus rather than competing with it.
- One size. The highly elastic waistband is designed to accommodate a broad range of dancers, while the stretch mesh falls naturally over the body.
- A surprisingly serious little skirt. The clean silhouette makes it equally convincing on recreational dancers, vocational students and professionals, something reflected in Mara's customer feedback.
Dance World Verdict
🩰 Studio Staple
This may be the simpler of Mara's two mesh skirts, but we think it could be the one dancers wear most.
The combination of exceptionally soft mesh, almost weightless fabric, an uncomplicated pull-on waist and a beautifully judged high-low length makes it incredibly easy to add to a studio wardrobe. It gives you the feeling of dancing in a skirt without sacrificing the visibility and freedom many dancers prefer for daily class.
And we particularly like that the customer feedback supports what the design promises: dancers aren't only commenting on how pretty it looks - they're noticing the softness, fit, quality and practicality.
Short or Long?
Choose the Short Mesh Ballet Skirt for daily class, pointe work and regular studio training when visibility of the legs and effortless layering matter most.
Choose Mara's Long Mesh Ballet Skirt when you want greater sweep and movement for variations, repertoire, coaching or rehearsal.
Short for everyday studio. Long for expressive rehearsal. We think there is a very good argument for eventually owning both.
