Secure, responsive and quite unlike a traditional leather-heeled pump, the Hullachan Hugs H5 Irish Dancing Pumps are designed for dancers who struggle with heel movement, loose material or bagging at the back of their shoes. An adaptive heel-hugging panel replaces the conventional leather heel section, shaping closely around the dancer’s heel as the foot changes position.

Combined with a soft leather upper, flexible split suede sole and Hullachan’s protective Clever Insole, Hugs offers a close performance fit with excellent heel security and cushioning for regular training, feiseanna and competition.

Hugs is designed around a problem many dancers know well: a pump that appears secure when standing but loosens or develops spare material behind the heel once the foot is pointed. Its distinctive flexible back follows the changing shape of the heel more closely, creating a clean, compact line without relying on a rigid leather heel section.

The defining feature of the Hullachan H5 is its adaptive heel-hugging construction. Traditional leather heels retain much of their original shape even as the dancer points, rises onto the toes or moves through a jump. Hugs replaces this section with an advanced flexible material that responds more readily to those changes in position.

As the heel lengthens and contracts through movement, the rear section remains closely wrapped around it. This helps reduce slipping, folding and loose material beneath or behind the heel while creating a more consistent connection between the pump and the foot.

This construction can be particularly helpful for dancers with narrow, shallow or difficult-to-hold heels. It may also suit dancers whose forefoot needs more room but whose heel slips in pumps selected to accommodate that width. The adaptive heel does not change the shape of the front of the pump, however, so the complete fit must still be checked carefully through the toes, forefoot and instep.

Across the front of the foot, a softer high-quality leather upper provides a responsive, close-fitting feel. The leather gradually softens and becomes more personal with wear, while the traditional ghillie lacing allows the dancer to adjust the hold across the instep and around the ankle.

Underneath, a split black suede sole separates the forefoot and heel contact areas, giving the middle of the shoe freedom to move with the foot. This supports pointing and articulation while maintaining the controlled floor contact dancers expect from a performance pump.

Inside, Hullachan’s Clever Insole uses a multi-layer construction to provide shock absorption, supportive cushioning and moisture management. The result is a more protected underfoot feel for repeated drills, jumps and longer training sessions without turning Hugs into a heavy or rigid shoe.

A clever answer to a difficult heel: Hugs is especially interesting for dancers who repeatedly find that a pump fits across the front but folds, slips or leaves loose leather behind a narrow or shallow heel.

Not automatically the answer for every foot: The heel can adapt beautifully while the leather forefoot remains too narrow or too generous. Hugs should always be judged as a complete shoe, with equal attention given to the toes, instep and heel.

Dance World Tip – Judge the heel while moving. Lace the pumps correctly, bring the heel fully into position and then point, rise and walk through the foot. The adaptive back should follow the heel without slipping down, folding beneath it or leaving loose material when the foot is pointed.

If Hugs is the dancer’s first advanced performance pump, professional fitting is strongly recommended. Where an in-store fitting is not possible, measure both feet carefully and consider comparing neighbouring sizes with the dancer’s teacher before the unsuitable pair is fully worn.
