Never choose a dance shoe from conversion alone. Ballet, jazz, ballroom and character shoes can fit very differently depending on the last, upper material, width and intended level of compression. Use this table to understand international equivalents, then follow the fit advice for the individual shoe.
How to Measure Your Feet for Dance Shoes
Measure both feet while standing, preferably later in the day. Use the longer foot when comparing your measurement with a shoe size chart.
Foot Length
Key MeasurementStand with your heel lightly against a wall and place your foot flat on a sheet of paper. Mark the end of your longest toe and measure the distance from the wall to the mark.
Measure in centimetres for the most accurate comparison with international shoe charts.
Measure Both Feet
Repeat the measurement on the other foot. It is very common for one foot to be slightly longer than the other, so always use the larger measurement when choosing your starting size.
Foot Width
Measure across or around the widest part of the forefoot. Width can be just as important as length in dance shoes, particularly in fitted ballet, jazz and ballroom styles.
Measure While Standing
Take measurements with your full weight on your feet. Standing allows the foot to spread naturally and gives a more realistic measurement than measuring while sitting.
Check the Dance Fit
A correctly fitted dance shoe should feel secure without restricting the toes or causing pressure. Different dance disciplines require different amounts of growing room, compression and heel security, so always follow the model-specific Dance World Fit Advice.
This chart is designed as an international reference rather than a replacement for individual brand sizing. Bloch, Capezio, So Danca, IDS, PortDance, Diamant and other dance footwear brands may use their own conversion systems or fit differently from standard street shoes. The International Dance Shoes Mia Tan Satin Latin Shoe solves one of those little problems experienced Latin dancers know surprisingly well - escaping toes. Its beautifully shaped strappy vamp is deliberately more enclosed than many traditional Latin sandals, helping keep the little toe securely inside while maintaining an elegant open-toe line. Add an ultra-flexible construction, gel cushioning and our sophisticated 3" heel, and Mia becomes a serious performance shoe with a very practical side.

Mia looks delicate, but there's some clever engineering hiding underneath those satin straps. The sweeping vamp creates the elegant openness expected from a Latin shoe without leaving the outer toes quite as exposed as many minimal sandals. In warm tan satin it keeps the leg line beautifully uninterrupted, while the higher heel and flexible construction give it a distinctly more performance-driven character.
International Dance Shoes Mia - Design & Performance
The most interesting part of IDS Mia is actually at the front. Its satin straps form a more contained vamp designed specifically to help hold the little toe securely inside the shoe. For dancers who find their outer toes escaping between the straps of very open Latin sandals, that small design decision can make a surprisingly big difference.
It doesn't achieve that security by making the shoe rigid. Quite the opposite: IDS builds Mia to be ultra flexible, allowing the forefoot to work and the toes to point with very little resistance. That combination - containment across the vamp with freedom underneath the foot - is what gives Mia its distinctive performance feel.
Our version comes with a 3" heel, placing the foot in a considerably more pronounced Latin position than lower social and introductory styles. This makes Mia particularly attractive to confident dancers who are already comfortable dancing at height and want a more refined, competition-inspired silhouette.
Inside, gel cushioning softens the feel underfoot while keeping the construction lightweight. That's important here: Mia still feels like a responsive Latin shoe rather than becoming heavily padded or disconnected from the floor.
The adaptable three-way strap adds another layer of versatility. It can run beneath the foot, directly around the ankle or wrap around the ankle, allowing dancers to adjust the way the shoe holds according to their own preference.
Underneath, the traditional suede dance sole provides the controlled glide required for turns, spins and detailed Latin footwork on an indoor dance floor.

Dance World Notes
The little-toe problem - Mia gets it.
This is probably our favourite detail. IDS intentionally closes the vamp enough to help prevent the little toe escaping between the straps. If that's happened to you in very open Latin sandals, Mia deserves a look.
Our 3" version is the serious one.
Mia itself is available from IDS in different configurations, but our higher-heeled version has a distinctly performance-led feel. We'd recommend it to dancers already comfortable working in a strong Latin heel rather than choosing 3" simply for appearance.

Overall Fit
Our IDS Mia generally fits true to size. We recommend starting with your usual UK dance shoe size.
Forefoot
The front should fit closely enough for the vamp to contain the toes without uncomfortable pressure. Mia is particularly useful for dancers who dislike the feeling of the little toe escaping through very open Latin straps.
Heel & Strap
The heel should remain securely seated during movement. Mia's adaptable strap can be worn beneath the foot, directly around the ankle or wrapped around it, so experiment with the configuration that gives you the most secure connection.
Dance World sizing recommendations are intended as a guide. Latin shoe fit is individual and can vary with foot width, toe shape, instep height and personal preference.
