All shoes are displayed in UK sizes. The size printed on the shoe or box may differ due to the manufacturer's international sizing system.

The Essential Jig should fit closely and securely without painfully compressing the foot. The toes should lie naturally, with the longest toe reaching close to the front without being tightly curled.

The heel should remain securely seated during walking and rising. The upper should not gape or move separately from the foot, and the ankle strap should provide security without cutting into the ankle.

The widest part of the foot should align with the widest part of the shoe. The front tip should sit correctly beneath the toes, and the shoe should bend through the dancer’s natural forefoot rather than collapsing beneath the arch.

Foot width, instep height, growing-room requirements and teacher preference can affect the correct fit. Professional fitting is strongly recommended for first hard shoes.

Shoe Fit & Break-In

Supportive by Design – Controlled Break-In Required

The Essential has a supportive suede sole that is designed to become more responsive through normal class wear. It may initially feel firmer than an advanced Ultra Flexi hard shoe; this structure is intentional and helps support developing feet.

Begin with short periods of class wear and teacher-approved exercises. Allow the dancer to practise walking, rising, pointing and basic hard-shoe movements while the sole and leather settle naturally.

The leather upper may soften and become slightly roomier with wear. A shoe that already slips or feels generous when new is therefore unlikely to improve through breaking-in.

Do not use:
• Water or soaking
• Hairdryers, radiators or direct heat
• Oils or oily shoe treatments
• Forceful folding or twisting
• Leaving the shoes bent overnight
• Hammering or striking the sole
• Aggressive traditional softening methods

These treatments can weaken the sole, overstretch the leather and damage the connection between the upper, tip and heel.

Longevity will depend on dancer weight, technique, training frequency, floor surface, toe-work habits and shoe care. Inspect the tips, heels, sole, stitching, strap and buckle regularly.

A smooth black leather upper combines with a supportive black suede sole, squared Leinster tips and specially shaped Leinster heels. The result is a traditional first jig shoe that helps dancers begin learning trebles, rhythm, clicks and controlled hard-shoe technique without the highly softened construction of an advanced competition model.

The Essential Jig is an honest first hard shoe. It does not try to imitate the extremely light or highly flexible feel preferred by some championship dancers. Instead, it gives developing feet a stable foundation from which to learn timing, weight placement and controlled movement.

Antonio Pacelli Essential Jig Shoes – Design & Performance

The Essential Jig has been created specifically for beginner and primary-level Irish dancers. Its black suede sole offers more flexibility than a traditional firm leather sole while retaining greater substance and support than Antonio Pacelli’s advanced Ultra Flexi constructions.

This balance is important for a first hard shoe. The sole can gradually respond to pointing and forefoot movement, but it does not immediately collapse beneath the arch. This gives the dancer resistance to work against while developing the foot and ankle control required for more advanced hard-shoe technique.

At the front, the squared Leinster tip creates the contact surface for clear beats and provides a defined platform for future toe work. Toe stands should only be introduced when the dancer has the necessary strength, alignment and approval from their teacher, the shape of the tip supports the skill but does not replace the technique required to perform it safely.

The specially shaped Leinster heel includes a curved inner profile designed to make the contact point for heel clicks easier to locate. This can help beginners understand the movement and develop cleaner contact as their timing and accuracy improve.

A traditional lace-up front allows the shoe to be adjusted securely across the foot. The black leather ankle strap and buckle provide an additional point of security, helping the heel remain correctly positioned during early trebles, clicks and travelling movements.

The smooth leather upper will gradually soften and settle around the foot with normal class wear. The Essential requires some controlled breaking-in, but its suede sole makes the process more manageable than it would be in a heavier, rigid leather-soled construction.

A very honest first hard shoe: The Essential Jig provides the stability and resistance young dancers need while learning how to control a hard shoe. It is deliberately more supportive than an advanced Ultra Flexi model and should not feel equally soft when new.

The right amount of flex for a beginner: The suede sole allows more workable movement than a traditional firm leather sole, while retaining enough substance to support balance and foot strength. It is designed to soften progressively rather than collapse immediately.

Dance World Tip - Do not rush toe stands. The squared front tip provides a suitable platform for developing toe work, but dancers should only begin toe stands when their teacher is satisfied with their strength, alignment and control.

The Essential should fit closely and securely without painfully compressing the foot. The toes should lie in a natural position inside the shoe, with the longest toe reaching close to the front without being tightly curled or forced against the tip.

Hard shoes should be checked while standing, walking and rising on a clean, protected surface. Keep the tips, heels and soles completely unmarked until the fit has been approved by the dancer’s teacher or an experienced fitter.
