Size & Fit Advice

All shoes are displayed in UK sizes. The size printed on the shoe or box may differ due to the manufacturer's international sizing system.

The Essential should fit neatly and securely without painfully compressing your child’s foot. The toes should lie naturally, with the longest toe reaching close to the front without being tightly curled.

Only a controlled amount of growing room should be considered. Excess space can allow the foot to slide, position the front tip incorrectly and make the shoe difficult for a beginner to control.

The heel should remain securely seated when walking and rising. The upper should not gape or move separately from the foot, and the ankle strap should provide security without cutting into the ankle.

The widest part of the foot should align with the widest part of the shoe. The sole should bend through the natural forefoot rather than collapsing beneath the arch.

Foot width, instep height, growing-room requirements and teacher preference can affect the correct fit. Professional fitting is strongly recommended for first hard shoes.

Description

The Antonio Pacelli Essential Children’s Irish Dancing Jig Shoes are supportive first hard shoes created for young dancers beginning trebles, rhythm work and early heel clicks. Smooth black leather combines with a balanced suede sole, shaped Leinster heels and a secure black ankle strap for confident first hard-shoe classes.

The Essential JIg is designed for beginner and primary-level dancers who need a shoe that feels structured and dependable beneath the foot, without the extremely soft construction of an advanced competition jig shoe.

Made for First Hard-Shoe Steps

A child’s first jig shoes should provide enough support for them to learn balance, timing and controlled foot placement. The Essential uses a black suede sole that is more flexible than a traditional firm leather sole, while remaining more supportive than an advanced Ultra Flexi style.

The squared Leinster tip creates a clear front contact surface for early rhythms, while the specially shaped Leinster heel has a curved inner profile designed to make heel-click contact easier to find. A traditional lace-up front and black leather ankle strap help keep the shoe securely connected to the foot during class.

Why Does a First Jig Shoe Feel More Structured?

The Essential Jig is not designed to feel like a very soft or heavily pre-flexed championship shoe. Its supportive suede sole gives young dancers something stable to work with as they learn how to control their feet, ankles and weight in hard shoes.

The sole will gradually become more responsive with normal class wear, while the smooth leather upper softens and settles around the foot. This controlled break-in helps the shoe become more personal without removing the support needed in the early stages.

As technique, strength and training demands develop, the dancer may later progress into a lighter or more flexible advanced jig shoe if recommended by their teacher.

How Should Children’s Jig Shoes Fit?

Irish dancing jig shoes should fit securely around the foot, but they should not fit like a tightly curled soft pump. Your child’s toes should lie naturally, with the longest toe reaching close to the front without painful pressure or being forced against the tip.

The heel should remain securely seated as your child walks and rises, while the upper should sit neatly over the foot without gaping, twisting or moving independently during movement.

Always measure your child’s foot rather than using their current school-shoe or trainer size. Everyday shoes often include growing room already, and different jig-shoe constructions can fit very differently.

Quick fit check: Ask your child to stand, walk and rise onto the balls of both feet on a clean, protected surface. The heel should stay seated, the foot should remain securely held and the sole should bend at the natural forefoot rather than through the middle of the arch.

Dance World Size Guide is intended as a helpful starting point. Foot shape, width, instep height, growing-room requirements and teacher preference can affect the best size for each dancer. We recommend asking your child’s Irish dancing teacher to check the fit before the shoes are fully worn.
