Mastering the Art of Tying Pointe Shoe Ribbons
As a professional dancer, I was always told during training that having messy ribbons or having them come undone while dancing was a ‘sackable offence’! While this was an extreme way to put it, it certainly motivated me to develop a method where my ribbons stayed perfectly secure. To this day, my ribbons have never slipped out on stage.
Every dancer has a slightly different approach to tying ribbons, but the fundamental principles remain the same. Here’s how you can ensure your ribbons are neat, supportive, and performance-ready every time.
Why Properly Tied Ribbons Matter
-
Support and Stability: The ribbons play a crucial role in supporting your ankle and maintaining the correct placement of the shoe on your foot.
-
Enhanced Aesthetics: Proper placement of ribbons and elastics can help pull up the shoe, highlighting the arch of your foot beautifully.
-
Injury Prevention: It's essential that the knot rests in the soft space behind your inner ankle bone, not on your Achilles tendon, to avoid discomfort and potential injuries.
Step-by-Step Guide to Tying Pointe Shoe Ribbons
Step 1: Position Your Foot Correctly
Sit or kneel with one foot flat on the ground in front of you. I prefer sliding my foot slightly forward, creating an angle greater than 90 degrees between my arch and shin. This positioning ensures that the ribbons are supportive both on flat and en pointe.
Step 2: Wrap the Inside Ribbon
Take the ribbon on the inside of your foot/arch and pull it securely to lift and support your arch. Wrap it around the front of your ankle to the back, then wrap it again. Stop when you reach your inside ankle bone for the second time, holding it in place. Switch hands if needed for ease.
Step 3: Cross with the Outside Ribbon
Next, take the outside ribbon and pull it across the front of your ankle, forming an 'X' with the first ribbon. Wrap it around the back of your ankle, laying it directly on top of the first ribbon. Continue wrapping until you meet the other ribbon at the inside ankle bone.
Step 4: Secure with a Knot
Knot the ribbons together just behind the ankle bone, ensuring the knot is placed in the soft space behind the ankle and not on the Achilles tendon.
Step 5: Tuck and Flatten the Knot
Lift the knotted ribbons slightly so that you have two flat ribbons lying directly on top of each other. Separate the ribbons with your finger and pull the knot through the middle so it sits below the ribbons. If there's any excess ribbon after the knot, fold it neatly. Finally, tuck the knot up under the bottom ribbon, allowing the top ribbon to lay flat and secure everything in place.
Additional Tips for Extra Security
-
Use Hairspray: If you're still nervous about your ribbons slipping during a performance, a light spritz of hairspray over the knot can help keep it secure.
-
Sew the Knot: For added security, use a needle and thread to sew through the ribbons and into the knot. This step ensures the knot stays connected and doesn't come undone during your routine.
Finding the Perfect Fit
Determining the right tightness for your ribbons involves some trial and error. Your foot should feel supported and secure, but the ribbon shouldn't dig into your Achilles tendon, as this can lead to pain or injury over time. If you experience discomfort, consider using stretch ribbons like Bloch's, which provide support while being gentler on the Achilles.
Final Thoughts
Tying pointe shoe ribbons may seem like a minor detail, but it plays a significant role in your overall performance. By following these steps and tips, you can keep your ribbons neat, supportive, and secure, allowing you to focus on dancing your best.
Happy dancing!
